Baptist Temple, despite its significant congregation in the 1960s, had become somewhat stagnant in a quickly evolving Houston neighborhood. Recognizing the need to adapt, the church undertook a thoughtful modernization project.
The redesign aimed to harmonize the building’s traditional roots with its contemporary surroundings. A key element of this was the transformation of the sanctuary, where the removal of a portion of the second floor created a more expansive interior. The entrance was also significantly improved by replacing narrow stairs with an open and inviting lobby.
In a nod to the church’s history, stained glass windows from a previous building were carefully preserved and integrated into the sanctuary, beautifully framing the baptistery. Complementing these traditional elements, contemporary punched windows were added to the lobby, enhancing the space with natural light and a vibrant feel, further accentuated by the stained concrete flooring.
